How to grow closer to god

How to Grow Closer to God Through the Habit of Worship

Have you ever realized that you are not as close to God as you once were?

Usually, spiritual drift does not happen overnight. We get busy. Our routines change. Prayer becomes less frequent. Sunday worship becomes easier to skip. Before long, we recognize that something feels different in our relationship with God.

The answer does not have to be a dramatic spiritual overhaul. Sometimes growing closer to God begins with one small, intentional step.

At Bethany Church, a church in Red Lion, PA, we believe spiritual growth happens as we develop practices that continually turn our attention toward God. One of the most important of those practices is worship.

Why Do We Drift Away From God?

Most people do not intentionally decide, “I want to become distant from God.”

It happens gradually.

Our schedules fill up. Responsibilities demand our attention. Work becomes stressful. Family life gets complicated. Entertainment and technology compete for whatever attention remains.

That is why spiritual habits matter.

If you realize you have been drifting, your first instinct might be to fix everything at once. Maybe you decide you will suddenly pray for two hours every morning or read huge portions of the Bible every day.

Those intentions may be sincere, but lasting spiritual growth often begins much smaller.

Choose a practice you can sustain. Give God your attention today. Then do it again tomorrow.

What Does It Mean to Worship God?

When many of us hear the word worship, we immediately think about music.

Music is certainly part of worship, but biblical worship is much larger.

Psalm 148 describes all creation giving praise to God. The sun, moon, stars, mountains, animals, and people are all called to honor their Creator. Psalm 95 calls God’s people to sing, rejoice, bow down, and kneel before the Lord.

Together, these passages give us a fuller picture of worship.

Worship includes praise and thanksgiving. We recognize God as our Creator and respond gratefully to what He has done.

But worship also involves humility and surrender.

When we bow before God, physically or spiritually, we acknowledge something important: God’s wisdom is greater than ours. His ways are higher than ours. Worship says, “God, I trust Your way more than my own.”

That makes worship more than something we sing.

It becomes a way we live.

Worship Doesn’t End on Sunday Morning

Gathering with other Christians for worship matters. But the easier part may actually be worshiping God for an hour on Sunday.

The challenge comes on Monday.

Can we worship God when the morning is chaotic?

Can our response to a difficult coworker honor Him?

Can the way we speak to our spouse or children become an expression of worship?

Can we trust God when circumstances do not go according to our plans?

Worship becomes a lifestyle when our response to God changes our response to everyday life.

That does not mean following Jesus suddenly makes everything easy.

There is an important difference between a life becoming better and a life becoming easier.

God never promises that faithful people will avoid frustration, disappointment, suffering, or difficult decisions. But a life centered on Him can have deeper purpose, lasting joy, and the assurance that we are not navigating those difficulties alone.

Why Worshiping Together Matters

There are ways to worship God individually, but Christianity was never intended to be lived entirely alone.

A fire provides a helpful picture.

When pieces of burning wood remain together, they help sustain one another’s heat. Separate them, and the individual pieces cool much faster.

Our spiritual lives can work similarly.

Christian community provides encouragement and accountability when we begin drifting. Sometimes simply seeing other people worship, pray, and continue trusting God reminds us that we are not alone.

And your presence matters to others, too.

We often evaluate worship by asking, “What did I get from it?”

But what if someone else needed you to be there?

A person entering a church may be grieving, questioning their faith, recovering from mistakes, struggling with addiction, feeling lonely, or wondering whether they will be accepted.

Your smile, encouragement, participation, or simply your presence might remind that person that there is a community willing to walk alongside them.

That’s one reason gathering with a church in Red Lion, PA can become an important part of developing a healthier spiritual rhythm.

Start With One Small Step Toward God

If you want to know how to grow closer to God, you do not need to change everything tomorrow.

Start with one practice.

Maybe you thank God before reaching for your phone in the morning.

Perhaps you spend five minutes praying before work.

You might read a short passage of Scripture before checking your email, attend worship more consistently, listen to worship music during your commute, or pause at the end of each day and name something for which you are grateful.

The specific practice matters less than intentionally turning your attention toward God.

These habits do not earn God’s love. God’s grace is already given to us. Spiritual practices simply help us intentionally nurture our relationship with the God who already loves us.
