Week 1
God created the world – he created light, the sky, the land, the oceans and seas, the plants, the sea
creatures, the birds, the land animals and reptiles. Then God created humans.
Genesis 1:26-27 (NIV)
[26] Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” [27] So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

God created us in his own image – which means we are gifted with many possibilities. Yet, we
experience his image in us everytime we experience love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Paul calls these the “fruits of the Spirit” (Gal
5:22-23). And this is what we experience when we live with God, each other and all creation – in
his image. After God finished each day, he called it good. It was not until he finished everything,
and it was complete that he called everything “very good”. God created everything in perfect
harmony so that we would be blessed and live very good lives (experiencing the fruits of the
Spirit.) Sometimes we get confused and think that we have to live very good lives so God will
bless us. Again, the blessing and goodness come from living with God and experiencing his
image in us.
